Pill Abortion (up to 7 weeks gestation)
- This form of abortion is a two step process offered to women who are less than seven weeks gestation.
- After a urine test, sonogram and individual counseling, the patient will begin the procedure by taking a medication called Mifeprex. This medication is given to interrupt the pregnancy.
- 24-36 hours after the first medication is taken, the patient will take a second medication called Misoprostol. Within 24 hours of taking this medication, cramping and heavy bleeding will occur causing the uterus to empty.
- Intermittent bleeding is expected for 2-3 weeks.
- We offer a three week follow-up appointment, free of charge, which is highly recommended.
First trimester abortion:
- First trimester abortions are performed for patients less than 13 weeks gestation.
- This procedure will be completed in one visit.
- The patient will receive a urine test, sonogram, determination of blood type RH factor and one-on-one counseling before the procedure is performed.
- A local anesthetic will be used to numb the cervix, which is then dilated. Dr. Press will then remove the contents of the uterus by using a suction technique.
- Intermittent bleeding is expected for 2-3 weeks.
- We offer a three week follow-up appointment, free of charge, which is highly recommended.
Second trimester abortion:
- Second trimester abortions are performed for patients between 13 and 16 weeks gestation.
- Many second trimester abortions require two days, although not all do. This is determined by Dr. Press after a thorough examination . He will decide the safest option based on current status and previous history of the patient.
- On the first day the patient will receive a urine test, sonogram, doctors examination and one-on-one counseling. Dr. Press will insert a Laminaria, which is a sterile material that will absorb moisture from your body to gently dilate the cervix.
- The second day the procedure will be completed. Dr. Press will remove the Laminaria, use a local anesthetic to numb the cervix, dilate the cervix and use a vacuum technique to remove the contents of the uterus.
- Intermittent bleeding is expected for 2-3 weeks.
- We offer a 3 week follow-up appointment, free of charge, which is highly recommended.
- For your comfort during the procedure, conscious sedation is offered but not required.
- If sedation is chosen, someone must be present to drive you home.
- Patients will not be able to drive after receiving sedation.
